This smoking case (1904) is perfect for repurposing for the modern age. Given to Robert Bacon Esq as a gift from his friends for the kindness he showed them on his yacht, the box has a working lock, solid brass metalwork throughout and beautiful hand carved front. Made from solid Oak, I have built in Oak and Tulipwood drawers that run on a removable Chestnut frame. The Oak drawers have the grain running across both faces.
The new Oak is deliberately designed to contrast with old Oak.
There are two full width drawers and one small box drawer. The interior is lined in red Carriage Silk from Humphries Weaving, Sudbury.
As with any object of this age, it comes with all the patina, wear and tear, handling marks and life history that we all have acquired, yet is still fully functional. An amazing item to touch and think about it’s history and journey.
The original antiques are purchased from reputable Antique Dealers, in this instance, one of the Long Melford, Suffolk UK, dealers.
I highly recommend a visit to Humphries Weaving website to understand the quality of the material we use.
This writing slope, dating back to the 1880s, has been beautifully repurposed for modern use. Crafted from walnut burl with a green leather skiver with gold-embossed decoration, it now features three custom oak inserts for storing jewellery. The lid insert includes dividers and hooks for bracelets and chains, while a small, hidden compartment beneath the inkwell can be accessed using a magnetic drawer pull.
The new oak elements are intentionally designed to contrast with the original wood, and the interior is lined in light blue-green carriage silk. The original lock plate remains, though the key has long been lost; fortunately, it’s not needed as the mechanism still works.
