Antiques Redone - 220 year old Candle Box redone as Jewellery Box

£350.00
sold out

One of my favourites, this candle box is from around 1800–1810, over 200 years old. Made from solid oak and lined with ancient blue paper, I created a chestnut insert that slides in and out effortlessly without harming the interior. Two magnets connect it to the back of the original lock, and the insert remains unwaxed to preserve the paper.

It features three levels—a large bottom compartment and two removable trays—lined with rich red Carriage Silk from Humphries Weaving. The original lock plate and key are still intact, though the mechanism has long since corroded and no longer works, which isn’t an issue today. Candle boxes originally locked to keep rats, mice, and even servants from taking the candles—a problem you’re unlikely to face now.

Like any piece of its age, it carries the patina, wear, and marks of its long history, yet remains completely functional. It’s a remarkable object to hold and imagine its journey through time. A perfect gift for the lover of the old and new.

All antiques are sourced from reputable dealers, in this case from Long Melford, Suffolk, UK.
